File Sharing Programs on ResNet

Every semester we have seen an increase in both Internet traffic and complaints from copyright holders of audio and video files. These issues are directly related to the use of file sharing programs like Aimster, Morpheus, and KaZaA on ResNet. We ask for your help in dealing with these important issues and want to alert you about potential negative consequences of using these programs without taking proper precautions.

All University of Alabama network users, including ResNet subscribers, share a single high-speed connection to the Internet. We have upgraded that connection in an attempt to alleviate our high traffic problems. However, all of the increased capacity was immediately consumed. File sharing programs like those mentioned were determined to be the cause. By using such programs, you may unknowingly be sharing files with everyone on the Internet. This effectively turns your computer into a server and consumes enormous amounts of bandwidth.

The ResNet acceptable use policy expressly prohibits you from using your computer as a server. In order to abide by this policy, you must disable file sharing in any program you use while on ResNet. Please see below for instructions on how to disable file sharing in many of the commonly used programs.

Failure to disable file sharing constitutes a violation of the ResNet acceptable use policy. If you are found in violation of this policy, you will be disconnected from ResNet and notified how to reinstate your service. Repeated or severe offenses shall be referred to the Office of Student Judicial Affairs. In addition, you may be subject to legal proceedings for copyright infringement as set forth in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

Your cooperation will result in better ResNet service for everyone. If you have any questions, contact the HelpDesk at 348-2435 or Help.Desk@ua.edu.

Disabling Sharing in Popular Programs

These instructions are for some of the more popular file sharing programs. If you do not know how to disable sharing in the program you use, or if it is not possible, you should not use it on the ResNet network.

Audiogalaxy

File sharing cannot be completely disabled in Audiogalaxy, which uses the same folder for uploads and downloads. You should not use this program on ResNet.
