Connecting Your Game Console
to ResNet
Network-capable game consoles such as Microsoft Xbox, Sony Playstation 2, and
Nintendo Gamecube are allowed on the ResNet network. You must register these devices
like you do your computer.
Every Ethernet card has a unique MAC address that is assigned to it when it is
manufactured. (This is not the same as an IP address, which is assigned based on
the network you connect to.) In order to register your game console, you must find
its MAC address. You will then use a separate Web page to register your console
with ResNet. Instructions are below for the three most popular systems.
Sony PlayStation 2
- Make sure that you have installed
the network adapter.
- Turn on the PS2 and insert the Network Adaptor Startup Disc.
- Once the menu has appeared, press X to enter the ISP Setup.
- Once it has loaded, press X to continue.
- Your PS2 will search for the network adapter.
After the network adapter has been found, press X to continue.
- Press X again to continue.
- Wait while the data is accessed, then select New, and then press X to continue.
- Type a name for your ISP setting, such as ResNet.
- When asked if you currently subscribe to an ISP service, select Yes and press
X to continue.
- For connection type, choose High speed connection (cable
or DSL) and press
X to continue.
- Select Automatic Settings and press X to continue.
- When asked if your ISP requires a User ID and Password, select No and press
X to continue.
- When asked if your Internet Service Provider requires you to input a DHCP Host
Name, select No. Unplug your network cable from the
PS2, and press X to
continue.
- The network connection test will fail. Do not press X
or Triangle. Press
Select to see the error message.
- The error message will display the hardware MAC address, which is a combination
of 12 numbers and letters. Write the MAC address down.
- Go to the game console
registration tool (will open in a new window) and enter
your BamaMail username and password (just like you did to register your computer)
and the MAC address. You will need to agree to the ResNet acceptable use policy.
Once the tool is complete, close the window.
- Your PS2 will be registered within one minute. To test the connection,
you will need to restart the ISP Setup program. Perform steps 1 through 13 above,
but do
not unplug the network cable this
time.
- Once the test is successful, press X to save the configuration
to the memory card. Do not remove
the network card while this information is being saved.
- Your PS2 should now be configured correctly and you should now be able to
start playing online. Press X to return to the main
menu.
Microsoft Xbox
The Xbox System Link function is not compatible with ResNet. Do not use this
mode while connected to the ResNet network, and do not use the System Link cable
to connect your Xbox to ResNet. System Link is intended to connect two Xboxes
directly together and is separate from the Xbox Live service, which is compatible
with ResNet.
- Make sure you have installed Xbox Live functionality using the Xbox Live DVD
that came with your system.
- Unplug the network cable from the Xbox.
- Turn on the Xbox console with no game disc in the tray.
- Open the Xbox Live option from the Xbox Dashboard.
- You should
receive a "Could not connect to Xbox Live" error. Select Settings from
the Connect Status screen.
- In the lower right corner of the menu will be "MAC=" followed by a combination
of 12 letters and numbers. This is the MAC address; do not change it! Write
down the MAC address.
- Make sure your console is set to use DHCP and that no network numbers/IP
addresses have been set.
- Go to the game
console registration tool (will open in a new window) and enter your BamaMail
username and password (just like you did to register your computer) and the
MAC address. You will need to agree to the ResNet acceptable use policy. Once
the tool is complete, close the window.
- Your Xbox will be registered within one minute. To finish setting up the connection,
open the Xbox's Network Setup Connect menu. This will
open a diagnostic screen verifying that a connection can be
made to the Xbox Live service.
Nintendo GameCube
- Remove the GameCube’s broadband adapter from the console.
- Printed on the underside of the adaptor is a MAC address. Write
this down.
- Go to the game
console registration tool (will open in a new window) and enter your BamaMail
username and password (just like you did to register your computer) and the
MAC address. You will need to agree to the ResNet acceptable use policy. Once
the tool is complete, close the window.
- Your GameCube will be registered within one minute and should automatically
connect to ResNet.
