Using "AOL 8 Plus" or "AOL 9 Optimized" with ResNet

The following information assumes that you are already an AOL subscriber and have "AOL 8.0 Plus" or "AOL 9.0 Optimized" installed on your computer. The University of Alabama does not provide support for AOL software or service. You are still responsible for any subscription fees charged by AOL; this is separate from your ResNet service and fees.

Resnet and other Non-AOL high-speed Internet providers are what AOL referrers to as "Bring your own access" (BYOA) connections. In most instances, AOL will recognize your Broadband connection and configure itself appropriately.

Verifying that AOL recognizes your Broadband BYOA connection

  1. Launch AOL
  2. On the Sign On screen, check the "Select Location" bar for the option Broadband (High Speed, Cable, DSL or other ISP). Note: To see the whole Select Location list, click the arrow at the right hand side of the box.
  3. Select Broadband as your location, then sign on.

If you were not given the choice of "Broadband," follow the instructions below to create a new "Bring Your Own Access" (BYOA) connection.

Creating a new broadband BYOA connection

  1. Make sure you are connected to the Internet via Resnet.
  2. Start the America Online software.
  3. On the AOL Sign On screen, click Setup.
  4. On the Edit America Online Setup window, click Add Modem.
  5. The AOL software will automatically scan your computer for ways to connect to AOL. This may take a minute or more.
  6. On the "Select Your Connection" screen, choose Broadband (High Speed, Cable, DSL or other ISP). Note: If you don't see this choice, verify that you are connected to the Internet through ResNet normally.
  7. Click Next.
  8. On the Confirm Your Selection screen, click Next. AOL will automatically sign on.

If you have any problems, please contact the computer center HelpDesk at 348-2435.

If this is your own AOL account, you may want to look into AOL's "Bring Your Own Access" billing plan. This reduces your cost to $14.95 per month as long as you do not dial in to AOL's service. Please see AOL Pricing Plans at AOL.com for more information.
