Using AOL 4.0/5.0 on ResNet

The following information assumes that you are already an AOL subscriber and have AOL 4.0 or 5.0 installed on your computer. The University of Alabama does not provide support for AOL software or service. You are still responsible for any subscription fees charged by AOL; this is separate from your ResNet service and fees.

The following procedure will set your AOL 4.0 or 5.0 software to use your ResNet connection:

  1. Open AOL

  2. At the Sign On screen, click the Setup button.

    AOL Sign On screen

  3. Click Add Modem

    AOL Edit Setup screen

  4. AOL will search for a way to connect, then allow you to "Select Your Connection." Make sure that TCP/IP: LAN or ISP (Internet Service Provider) is selected, then click Next.

    AOL Select Your Connection screen

  5. Un-check the "Sign on to America Online Now!" box, then click Next.

AOL Confirm Your TCP/IP Connection screen

  6. On the sign-in screen, make sure that ISP/LAN Connection is selected in the Select Location drop-down box. Then login as usual.

If you have any problems, please contact the computer center HelpDesk at 348-2435.

If this is your own AOL account, you may want to look into AOL's "Bring Your Own Access" billing plan. This reduces your cost to $14.95 per month as long as you do not dial in to AOL's service. Please see AOL Pricing Plans at AOL.com for more information.
